a solution to numerous issues our earth is facing. Founded by a journalist Anuradha Prasad in 2023, the platform is dedicated to providing information and updates on the uses of Hemp, a category of Cannabis or Bhang. Unlike cannabis, hemp is a non-recreational plant that has a very low level of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound responsible for intoxication. It also contains Cannabidiol (CBD) which contains medicinal properties and thus helps in the treatment of seizures, anxiety, insomnia, joint pain, epilepsy and inflammation. From root to seed, each part of the plant can be used in making thousands of products including fibers, medicines, biofuels, plastic substitutes, protein powder and building houses. Not only does it take less amount of water and take only several months to grow, but hemp also absorbs around 1000 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare which can help fight climate change.
Hemp Yuga is dedicated to reaching out to authorities and people to spread the word that this plant alone can help achieve most of the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations by providing employment, female empowerment, health, saving water and much more. Our mission is educating the population through our multiple channels about the difference between the notorious Bhang’s and its cousin Hemp, a non-recreational plant that can help millions of people in the mountain regions in terms of employment and sustainability.
Hemp is said to have been used in the making of over 25,000 products
including fibers, medicines, building materials and much more. The
most significant aspect of the crop is its capability to grow fast and
consumption of less amount of water compared to cotton plants. This
plant can turn into a wonder-saving earth if given the opportunity as
it not only can replace plastic to a surprising extent, but its
capability to observe huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the
environment can be a boon for Mother Earth which has been facing a
climate crisis for the past several decades.
Hemp, a member of the Cannabis sativa group, has a long history rooted
in the mountain ranges of China and India. Unfortunately, hemp faced a
setback in 1985 when cannabis was banned by the UN. However, several
countries such as China, Canada, Australia, the United States, Russia,
and Uruguay later acknowledged the mistake and lifted the ban to
harness the economic potential of industrial hemp. Regrettably, India,
where cannabis was once highly regarded, was left behind in
capitalizing on this Himalayan treasure. Due to the requirement that
legalization must be enacted by state governments, Uttarakhand became
the first Indian state to permit hemp cultivation in 2017. Although
other states like Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra are considering
following in Uttarakhand's footsteps, India still has a long journey
ahead.
At Hemp Yuga, our mission is to actively promote the benefits of hemp.
We believe that an informed and engaged public can exert pressure on
the government to actively support this cause, leading to a reduction
in carbon footprint and the empowerment of mountain communities who
currently migrate to cities in search of livelihood opportunities.
